TerrorBytes: The Evolution of Horror Gaming

From the creators of the critically-acclaimed In Search of Darkness trilogy and First Person Shooter, it’s time to enter a whole new world of horror…  TerrorBytes!

In this new five-part episodic documentary (five hours total), we will explore and celebrate the rich history of horror gaming, taking you behind-the-scenes with the developers, artists, composers, and other experts who crafted some of the scariest games of all time.

Our growing cast includes legendary Silent Hill composer & producer Akira Yamaoka, Dead by Daylight co-directors Mathieu Coté and Dave Richard, Sierra Online co-founders Roberta Williams (Writer/Designer: Phantasmagoria) and Ken Williams (Programmer: Mystery House), as well as Dave Szymanski (Creator: Iron Lung, Dusk) and Hifumi Kōno (Director: Clock Tower, Clock Tower: The First Fear).

Joining them are Hubert Chardot (Writer: Alone in the Dark, Alone in the Dark 2; Scenario Design: Alone in the Dark 3), Thomas Grip (Co-Founder: Frictional Games; Creative Director: Penumbra and Amnesia series, Soma), Airdorf (Creator: FAITH: The Unholy Trinity), John Romero (Programmer/Designer: DOOM), and many more (check out the cast section for the full list)

We’re still adding new names, and look forward to sharing casting news with pre-order customers during our regular updates.

The five episodes are:

Episode 1 - Enter The Survival Horror: We explore the survival horror genre, examining the early titles like 3D Monster Maze and Project Firestart, its explosive popularity in the 90s - where titles like Alone in the Dark, Resident Evil, and Silent Hill captured the imagination of the masses - and its legacy and enduring popularity today.

Episode 2 - Lethal Licences: We explore the good, the bad, and the ugly, including early Halloween and Texas Chainsaw Massacre games, bizarre obscurities like Ringu: Infinity, and successes like the brilliant Alien: Isolation, as well as the growing popularity of licensed characters in games like Dead by Daylight.

Episode 3 - Narrative Nightmares: From the surreal and unique to the kitsch and campy, we celebrate and explore cinematic horror games and the now-obscure world of full motion video horror games, exploring “so-bad-it's-good” games like Night Trap, Sierra Online classics like Phantasmagoria, and the unusual use of CG tech in titles like D, among many others.

Episode 4 - The Indie Revolution: We shine a light on indie development in horror gaming, from breakout hits like Five Nights at Freddy’s and Amnesia to the many unique and one-of-a-kind experiences like Yume Nikki, Papa Sangre, and FAITH: The Unholy Trinity.

Episode 5 - Cursed and Controversial: We dive down the rabbit hole of controversy and explore the games - like Doom, Manhunt, and Saw - that people wanted banned. Along the way, we’ll also take a look at the unusual world of “cursed” games, including urban legends like Polybius, Petscop, and Crow 64.

Join Us On a Year-Long Celebration of Horror Gaming

Alongside the production of the documentary, we’ll be holding an exclusive year-long celebration of horror gaming, including live Q&As with industry legends, vidcasts, and live backer update events.

Get Closer To Horror Gaming Legends With Our Q&As

Drawing from our wonderful cast of interview talent, we'll host lively discussions with notable developers and artists. Conversation will include fan/audience questions and interaction as we dive into their body of work, their favorite horror games, and explore the impact and influence of horror in gaming.

Delve Deeper With Our Vidcast

Throughout production of TerrorBytes, we’ll host a variety of 60-minute long horror gaming vidcasts that anyone who purchased the series during the pre-sale can attend.

Each one will cover a topic from the weird and wonderful world of horror gaming and feature at least one special guest: game developers, creators, industry experts and more will all feature in these interactive and community driven discussions.

Proposed topics include:

Designing a Killer: What goes into making a monster? As horror games have terrified us with everything from boss battles to creepy hidden NPCs, we investigate and break down what goes into the creation of these nightmare creatures.

Crafting tension: How do you structure a level for a horror game? What about mechanics and movement? And how do these things craft tension? Where horror in other mediums take us on guided pathways through crafted scares, how does that translate when the player has control and input over the events of the game? In this discussion we explore these questions and more.

Scary Stories: In this discussion we’ll be looking at some of the incredible narratives in horror games, examining the lore, the way they are constructed, their branching storytelling techniques and sharing some of our favourite stories, fun theories and deep-cut analysis on gaming's most terrifying tales.

As backers, you will also get the chance to suggest and vote on topics for the vidcasts, with the winning theme being added to our planned line-up.

Live Backer Update Events

It is part of our mission at CREATORVC to provide collaborative experiences for our backers, and TerrorBytes is no exception. We are already working directly with the Horror Gaming fanbase and expect to continue this process throughout production.

One way we do this is through our live backer updates, where we as a production team can communicate how the project is going, answer your questions about what we’re doing, and give insights into the project for which you can then provide feedback.

Collectible Merchandise

In addition to the year-long celebration of horror gaming and the documentary, we also have a wide range of high-quality merchandise. The Standard (Blu-ray) tier includes everything except the t-shirt and mouse mat, which are in the Deluxe tier (and above):

Free Digital Copy of First Person Shooter

Join TerrorBytes and you’ll receive a free digital copy of First Person Shooter, our critically acclaimed 4+ hour epic documentary on fps games.

First Person Shooter takes you on a nostalgic journey through 50 years of FPS history. Along the way, you’ll hear from John Carmack and John Romero sharing stories from id Software’s early days, Cliff Bleszinski on Unreal and Unreal Tournament, Warren Spector on System Shock and Deus Ex, Marcus Lehto and Joseph Staten on Halo, and many more.

We also have 150 Blu-ray copies of First Person Shooter that are available as an optional upgrade at checkout. These are our last stock, so get one before they go! Your Blu-ray will ship along with your other physical items in 2025.

Six Months Access to Darkness Unlimited

Get six months free access to our new horror member platform, Darkness Unlimited when you join TerrorBytes at the Premium Digital tier or above.

Darkness Unlimited includes 20+ hours of extended, never seen before content from our In Search of Darkness ‘80s Trilogy, as well as the 14+ hours of content from the trilogy itself.

Soundtrack

We’ve partnered with our friends at New Retro Wave again to curate our official soundtrack.

Shipping & Fulfillment

Shipping: Shipping is charged at the point of fulfillment at cost (your shipping cost will be the price we pay and we will not make profit on it). In the current economic climate, shipping costs are fluctuating and hard to predict. Delaying payment for shipping benefits both sides as we avoid overcharging (bad for you) and undercharging (bad for our documentary budget).

Fulfillment: Our physical rewards are manufactured and shipped from the United Kingdom using Royal Mail’s untracked and all items are sent in very study packaging (posters rolled, not folded) to ensure everything arrives with you safely.

Small Print

TerrorBytes is currently in pre-production. By making a purchase you acknowledge that elements of the project, including but not limited to the artwork and content, is subject to change, and that the final project may differ from what is presented while the campaign is active.
